Understanding Clutch Types
Types of Clutches
- Friction Clutch - are the most common type and use friction to connect and disconnect shafts. They consist of a clutch disc, pressure plate, and flywheel. When the clutch pedal is pressed, the pressure plate releases the clutch disc, disengaging the power transmission.
- Electromagnetic clutches - use an electric current to engage and disengage the clutch. When power is applied, the electromagnetic field pulls the clutch components together, creating a connection between the shafts.
- Hydraulic Clutch - use hydraulic fluid to transfer force from the clutch pedal to the clutch mechanism. They offer smoother engagement and are commonly found in modern vehicles.
- Centrifugal Clutch - engage automatically based on the engine's RPM. As the engine speed increases, the clutch's centrifugal force causes the clutch shoes or rollers to engage, transmitting power to the output shaft.
